Sri Madvirat Pothuluri Veerabrahmendra Swamy Biography
SWAMI SRI VEERABRAHMENDRA
A Monograph on Pothuluru Veerabrahmendra Swamy
In the year 1952 A. D, THE scholar wrote THUS ;
“In one of the palm-leaf manuscripts of Kaiajnanam available in the mutt it was written that Iswaramma the grand-daughter of Veerabrahmam (daughter of Swami’s eldast son) entered Samadhi in the year 4871 of Kali era (which corresponds to Monday i. e, the 2nd day of the increasing moon in Chaitra in the year Vikari). According to Kali era, the current year is 5060 (in the year 1952 A.D.). Therefore, Iswaramma must have entered Samadhi exactly 189 years ago (5060-4871). It is belived that this virgin Yogini lived a full life of 95 years which means that she was born in the year 4776 of Kali Era (4871-95). It is said that sha was about 12 years old at the time the Swami entered Samadhi. If these twelve years are added to the year of her birth (4776 Kali Era) roughly 4788 of Kali era must be the date of Swami’s entering Samadhi.” Therefore, according to K.V. Raghavacharya, the Swami entered Samadhi during the ninth decade of 17th Century (approximately). The life time of Veerabrahmam is evidently a little more than 80 years. Hence he must’ have been born in the first decade of 17th Century.
This calculation of K.V.R. Acharya seems to be almost in coincidence with that of K.L. Narayana with a slight variation in the date of Samadhi of the Swami. According to K.L.N, the Swami was born in the year 1608 A.D. (Kilaka), and intered samadhi in 1693 A.D. (Srimukha). Having carefully arrived at these dates, K.L.N, states, that he had consulted the present principal Guru of the mutt, Sri Venkateswara Swami and the Guru of the mutt also approved of his findings. Therefore the scholar makes an appeal to the public that these dates of Swami’s birth and Samadhi should not be alterned and it will not be authentic if anybody meddles with them.
Dr. E. Vedavyasa a vetaran scholar arrives at a date of Swami’s Mahasamadhi, considering Swami’s samadhi festival Day (celebrated at Kandimallayapalle) as tenth day of the increasing moon in Vaisakha month which corresponds to Sunday, the 17th April 1692. (page 166 of his research work in Telugu on Veerabrahmendra yogi - 1987).
On close scrutiny of all the propositions and conclu¬sions of the several scholars regarding the dates of birth and Samadhi of Veerabrahmam, it is evident that a good number of them are of the opinion that the Swami was born in the first decade of the 17th century and entered Samadhi in the last decade of the same century. These dates could be taken for granted with no dispute.
